Best Countries to Buy Cheap and Authentic Diamonds

If you’re shopping for Diamond engagement rings, the country you buy from can make a difference to your overall cost, choice, and buying experience. Some destinations are major diamond trading and cutting centres, giving buyers access to competitive pricing and a wide selection. But “cheap” should never mean compromising on authenticity or quality.

The good news is that you don’t necessarily have to pay a premium to buy a genuine, high-quality diamond. The key is knowing where the global diamond industry is concentrated, and, more importantly, knowing how to verify what you’re buying.

    1. India

India is one of the world’s most important centres for diamond cutting and polishing. Surat, in particular, is renowned for its enormous diamond-processing industry.

Because a significant portion of the world’s diamonds passes through Indian cutting and polishing facilities, buyers can find a broad range of stones and jewellery at competitive prices. India is particularly worth considering if you’re looking for custom-made jewellery or want to compare a large selection of diamonds.

However, don’t assume that every diamond sold in a major diamond market is automatically authentic. Always ask for appropriate certification and documentation.

    2. United Arab Emirates

The UAE, particularly Dubai, has established itself as a major global jewellery and diamond trading hub. Its international customer base, extensive jewellery market and access to diamonds from major global centres make it an attractive destination for buyers.

Dubai can be especially convenient for shoppers looking for both loose diamonds and finished jewellery. The UAE’s luxury retail environment also means buyers can compare designs, stones and jewellers in one place.

If you’re purchasing a diamond in Dubai, compare the complete price rather than simply looking at the advertised price of the stone. Consider the diamond’s grading, setting, craftsmanship and any applicable taxes or fees.

    3. Belgium

Antwerp has been associated with the international diamond trade for centuries and remains one of the world’s best-known diamond centres.

Its greatest advantage is access to an established network of diamond dealers and professionals. Buyers who know what they’re looking for can potentially find competitive prices because of the concentration of expertise and supply.

For first-time buyers, however, the sheer number of choices can be overwhelming. A reputable jeweller and independent diamond grading report can make the process considerably easier.

    4. Israel

Israel, particularly Tel Aviv and the Ramat Gan Diamond Exchange district, is another significant centre for the international diamond trade.

The country has a strong history of diamond cutting, polishing and trading. Buyers looking for professionally cut diamonds and sophisticated jewellery can find considerable choice.

As with any international diamond purchase, the seller matters just as much as the location. A diamond’s country of sale does not, by itself, guarantee its quality or authenticity.

    5. Thailand

Thailand is better known internationally for coloured gemstones, but it also has an established jewellery manufacturing industry and can be an attractive destination for buyers interested in jewellery craftsmanship and custom designs.

If you’re buying diamond jewellery here, compare the stone’s grading and the finished piece rather than assuming that a lower price automatically represents better value.

Cheap Doesn’t Always Mean Better Value

The most important thing to remember is that there is no single country where every diamond is cheaper.

Diamond prices depend on several factors, including the stone’s cut, colour, clarity and carat weight, commonly known as the 4Cs. GIA notes that these characteristics are fundamental to evaluating a diamond, while a grading report provides an independent assessment of its quality.

A diamond that appears cheaper may have a lower cut grade, different proportions, weaker clarity characteristics or another factor that affects its beauty and value.

That’s why I always recommend comparing diamonds based on their specifications—not simply their price tags.

How to Make Sure Your Diamond Is Authentic

Wherever you buy, ask for a reputable independent grading report. A GIA report, for example, provides an unbiased assessment of the diamond’s 4Cs and discloses relevant treatments. Its report number can also be checked against GIA’s database.

    You should also:

    • Ask whether the diamond is natural or laboratory-grown.
    • Request the original grading report.
    • Verify the report number with the issuing laboratory.
    • Compare the report details with the actual diamond.
    • Buy from an established jeweller with a transparent return and after-sales policy.
    • Don’t judge value based on carat weight alone.

If you’re buying a complete jewellery set, the same principle applies. For example, when choosing bridal diamond jewellery, look beyond the overall appearance and ask about the individual diamonds, metal quality, craftsmanship and certification where applicable.

So, Where Should You Buy Your Diamond?

India, the UAE, Belgium and Israel are all important diamond markets, while Thailand can be particularly interesting for jewellery manufacturing and custom designs. But the “best” country ultimately depends on what you’re buying, your budget, and how confidently you can evaluate the diamond.

Instead of focusing only on finding the cheapest diamond, focus on finding the best-quality diamond for your budget from a trustworthy jeweller.

After all, a diamond is a significant purchase. Saving a little money isn’t worthwhile if you’re left questioning its authenticity, quality or long-term value.

The smartest diamond purchase isn’t necessarily the cheapest one—it’s the one where you know exactly what you’re paying for.
